Welcome to the first Hook and Literal of Outsider Outbox.

What are your thoughts on two different head coaches alleging that they were offered money to lose games over the course of the season?
I’m going to set aside the race aspect of this, at least for now. If more information on that front comes to light, I may have to answer this in another way. As it stands, the idea that an ownership would intentionally do that to their coaches, players, and fans is absurd on its face. In my mind it would be such a black eye for the league, it would rival the 1919 Black Sox scandal and could damage the relationship of the NFL and fans.
An owner may see it as a long-term business investment to take small losses now for players they believe could offer more wins down the road, but no pick is guaranteed; for every Joe Burrow, there’s a whole furniture showroom of Tim Couches.
Also, coaches know, it’s win now or you’re gone. In this scenario, an owner would have to be willingly sabotaging his HC. Would it happen? Maybe, but would the coach go along with it? Not if he wanted to coach again.
Then there’s the question of the players. They’re smart enough to know if they’re being set up to fail and they’re always chasing glory. And money. Would any player play the role of Buck Weaver and keep his mouth shut? Doubtful.
That doesn’t mean it didn’t or wouldn’t happen.
