Previous Trivia Answer: What was the official name of the Green Bay Packer cheerleaders?
The Packers had several squads of cheerleaders in different eras. Originally, Green Bay East and West high schools had the duties, but it wasn’t until 1950 when Bernie Matzke organized a group of baton twirlers that they were called the Packerettes. In 1961, they were renamed The Golden Girls (borrowing their name from Hornung) and had a wholesome Midwest image on the wishes of Lombardi. During this era, they were organized by national champion baton twirler, Mary Jane Sorgel. Their name changed back to Packerettes in 1973 and Matzke returned as their leader after Sorgel got engaged in 1972. They were the Packerettes until 1977 when they were renamed again as the Green Bay Sideliners. This iteration was disbanded in 1988, thus ending the Green Bay Packers’ professional cheerleading squad and opening the door for the UWGB and St. Norbert collegiate squads to share cheerleading duties at Green Bay home games.
