🔍 Week 3 Preview + Picks
🚨 The Injury Situation Has Gone CRAZY
Week 2 produced a remarkable number of significant injuries, particularly at quarterback.
Quarterback carousel
Giants — Jaxson Dart OUT
This one went from “maybe an MCL sprain” to season-ending surgery in roughly 48 hours.
Dart suffered damage to his MCL, PCL and meniscus. His ACL remains intact, but the meniscus/MCL damage requires surgery. Jameis Winston takes over for New York.
That’s enormously important for Titans @ Giants.
Commanders — Jayden Daniels OUT
Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow against Dallas and will not play this week. Marcus Mariota will start against Seattle.
Bears — Caleb Williams questionable
Williams suffered a hamstring injury against Minnesota and is considered week-to-week. Chicago had not yet determined its Week 3 starter as of Wednesday. Tyson Bagent is also dealing with a concussion, meaning veteran Case Keenum was taking first-team reps Wednesday.
That’s a massive development for Monday night’s Eagles-Bears game.
49ers — Brock Purdy’s status
Purdy is dealing with shoulder/toe issues and was listed as questionable. Kyle Shanahan said he was highly unlikely to start against Arizona, although San Francisco hoped he might be healthy enough to serve as a backup.
That’s something I’m watching closely before kickoff.
Seahawks — Sam Darnold
And this is the good news in Seattle.
Darnold returned to practice Wednesday as a limited participant after missing Week 2 with his glute injury. Seattle plans to increase his workload before deciding whether he starts against Washington.
🏥 Other Major Injury / Roster Notes
Rams
Puka Nacua’s status is TBD. He missed Monday night’s game with a hip injury, but Sean McVay said he was hopeful Nacua could return against Denver.
The Rams did, however, get a gigantic boost from Matthew Stafford, who threw four TDs against the Giants.
Texans
Houston has some significant injury concerns entering Indianapolis:
- Nico Collins — DNP
- Jadeveon Clowney — DNP
- Trent Brown — DNP
- Will Anderson Jr. — limited/rest
Collins missing practice is particularly important against an Indianapolis defense that needs to deal with Houston’s passing attack.
Colts
Indianapolis has lost WR Alec Pierce, who will miss several weeks with his heel injury and was placed on IR. The Colts also had several players limited or absent Wednesday.
Panthers
RB Jonathon Brooks is headed for surgery and is expected to miss at least six weeks.
Carolina also had LB Devin Lloyd, OLB Jaelan Phillips and S Nick Scott miss Wednesday’s practice.
Bengals
Cincinnati is 2–0, but DT Jonathan Allen and DT B.J. Hill both missed Wednesday’s practice, while WR Andrei Iosivas is headed to IR with a thumb injury.
Tee Higgins did play through his shoulder issue in Week 2 and produced 95 yards, so Cincinnati still has its dangerous Chase/Higgins combination available.
Eagles
Philadelphia re-signed TE Zach Ertz to its practice squad, while starting TE Dallas Goedert is expected to miss several weeks with an MCL sprain.
Seahawks
Seattle promoted safety Rodney Thomas II to the 53-man roster after two weeks on the practice squad.
Falcons
Atlanta placed CB A.J. Terrell on injured reserve, meaning he’ll miss at least four games. Atlanta also signed DL Zach Harrison to the active roster.
And perhaps most importantly for tonight:
Michael Penix Jr. is starting for Atlanta.
📈 Momentum Trends
🔥 Hot
San Francisco, Buffalo, Cincinnati, Seattle, Kansas City
All are 2–0.
📈 Surprising Starts
Las Vegas Raiders — 2–0
The Raiders have already beaten the Dolphins and Chargers.
Minnesota Vikings — 2–0
And now Kyler Murray is back.
Carolina Panthers — 1–1
After getting annihilated by Chicago, Carolina responded by annihilating Atlanta.
⚠️ Teams Under Pressure
Chargers — 0–2
Dolphins — 0–2
Texans — 0–2
Commanders — 0–2
Bucs — 0–2
And then there’s…
🧐 The Rams
Technically 1–1, but they went from getting destroyed 27–7 by San Francisco to destroying the Giants 28–6.
Matthew Stafford looked outstanding Monday night, throwing four TDs and 327 yards.
🗓️ Week 3 Schedule & Picks
All times Central. Lines are approximate current market lines and can move before kickoff. Current lines checked against the Week 3 market published by FOX Sports.
Thursday, September 24
🏈 Atlanta Falcons @ Green Bay Packers — 7:15 PM CT
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Falcons @ Packers | GB –6 | Packers | 27–20 | Penix gets his first start of the season, but Green Bay’s home field and defense should be enough. |
🎯 Thursday Pick: Green Bay Packers
Green Bay has some injury issues of its own — most notably Jayden Reed OUT — but Atlanta is coming off that ugly 34–3 loss to Carolina.
Penix is the interesting variable. He’s a legitimate reason to be cautious about laying six points, but I’m still taking Green Bay at Lambeau.
Sunday, September 27
Early Games — 12:00 PM CT
🏈 Cincinnati Bengals @ Pittsburgh Steelers
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bengals @ Steelers | CIN –3.5 | Bengals | 27–20 | Cincinnati is 2–0 and Burrow looks healthy enough to trust. Pittsburgh’s injury situation is becoming difficult to ignore. |
Pick: Bengals
🏈 Los Angeles Chargers @ Buffalo Bills
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chargers @ Bills | BUF –7 | Bills | 30–20 | Buffalo is 2–0 and averaging 38.5 points per game. L.A. has looked increasingly dysfunctional offensively. |
Pick: Bills
The Chargers are already 0–2 and now have to travel to Buffalo. Justin Herbert is dealing with an ankle issue, while L.A. also placed two tight ends on IR after Week 2.
🏈 New England Patriots @ Jacksonville Jaguars
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patriots @ Jaguars | JAX –3 | Jaguars | 24–20 | Jacksonville’s defense gets after Drake Maye, who has thrown four interceptions through two games. |
Pick: Jaguars
Maye has struggled with turnovers against Seattle and Pittsburgh, and now gets Jacksonville on the road. ESPN notes that all four of his interceptions have come on deep throws.
🏈 New York Jets @ Detroit Lions
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jets @ Lions | DET –6.5 | Lions | 28–20 | Detroit needs a bounce-back after Buffalo exposed some defensive problems. |
Pick: Lions
🏈 Carolina Panthers @ Cleveland Browns
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Panthers @ Browns | CAR –2.5 | Panthers | 24–20 | Carolina’s defense just shut down Atlanta, but missing Brooks and several defensive pieces makes this closer. |
Pick: Panthers
The Panthers’ defense has been impressive, but three important defenders missed Wednesday practice. Jonathon Brooks’ season-long absence also changes the offense.
🏈 Houston Texans @ Indianapolis Colts
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texans @ Colts | HOU –2.5 | Texans | 24–20 | Houston desperately needs its first win, and its defense should eventually control the matchup. |
Pick: Texans
This is a risky one. Both teams are winless, but Houston’s defensive talent gives it the edge — assuming the Texans can keep Nico Collins involved despite his hamstring issue.
🏈 Tennessee Titans @ New York Giants
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Titans @ Giants | NYG –3 | Titans | 23–20 | Jameis Winston replacing Jaxson Dart changes the entire equation for New York. |
🎯 Pick: Titans
This is one of my favorite upset possibilities.
Dart’s season-ending injury is devastating for the Giants, and Winston’s performance against the Rams was ugly: 11-of-27 for 111 yards and an interception.
🏈 Seattle Seahawks @ Washington Commanders
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seahawks @ Commanders | SEA –7 | Seahawks | 27–17 | Darnold’s potential return plus Seattle’s defense gives the champs too much. |
🎯 Pick: Seahawks
The big question is Darnold. He was limited Wednesday and Seattle intends to ramp him up this week.
But even if Drew Lock starts, Seattle has already shown it can win with him.
Washington, meanwhile, is turning to Marcus Mariota after Jayden Daniels’ elbow injury.
🏈 Kansas City Chiefs @ Miami Dolphins
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chiefs @ Dolphins | KC –11.5 | Chiefs | 34–17 | Kansas City is 2–0 and Miami is 0–2. This could get ugly quickly. |
🎯 Pick: Chiefs
This is our biggest spread of the week, but Kansas City has already survived two high-scoring games and now gets a Miami team that has allowed 61 points in two games.
Sunday Afternoon — 3:05 PM CT
🏈 Arizona Cardinals @ San Francisco 49ers
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cardinals @ 49ers | SF –8.5 | 49ers | 24–17 | San Francisco’s defense and home field win this even if Brock Purdy can’t start. |
🎯 Pick: 49ers
This pick comes with a Brock Purdy-sized asterisk.
Purdy has been dealing with shoulder/toe issues, and Kyle Shanahan said he was highly unlikely to start as of the latest report.
But San Francisco is 2–0, has allowed only 20 points through two games, and gets Arizona at home.
🏈 Minnesota Vikings @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vikings @ Buccaneers | MIN –1.5 | Vikings | 27–20 | Kyler Murray returns after clearing concussion protocol, giving Minnesota its biggest offensive weapon back. |
🎯 Pick: Vikings
And yes — Kyler Murray is correctly listed as a Viking this time!
He cleared the NFL concussion protocol Monday and is expected to start.
Sunday Afternoon — 3:25 PM CT
🇧🇷 Baltimore Ravens vs. Dallas Cowboys — Rio de Janeiro
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ravens vs. Cowboys | BAL –2.5 | Ravens | 31–27 | Baltimore’s running game should rebound, and Lamar Jackson gets the more favorable matchup against Dallas’ defense. |
🎯 Pick: Ravens
This is the Brazil game, at Maracanã Stadium.
Baltimore’s offensive line struggled badly through two weeks, but ESPN notes that Dallas has generated only two sacks so far — a potentially favorable matchup for Lamar.
Zay Flowers’ hamstring remains something to watch; he missed Wednesday practice.
🏈 Las Vegas Raiders @ New Orleans Saints
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Raiders @ Saints | NO –3 | Raiders | 27–23 | Vegas is 2–0 and has already beaten two AFC West opponents. I’m not ready to stop believing yet. |
🎯 Pick: Raiders
Upset alert.
The Saints are favored at home, but Vegas has beaten Miami and the Chargers to start 2–0.
Sunday Night Football — 7:20 PM CT
🏈 Los Angeles Rams @ Denver Broncos
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rams @ Broncos | LAR –2.5 | Rams | 27–23 | Stafford is coming off a four-TD performance, and the Rams finally look like the offense we expected. |
🎯 Pick: Rams
This is probably the game I’m most interested in watching.
The Rams went from 27–7 embarrassment to 28–6 destruction in one week.
Stafford threw four touchdowns against New York, including two to Davante Adams, while Puka Nacua sat out with his hip injury.
If Nacua returns, the Rams’ offense gets even more interesting.
Monday Night Football — September 28
🏈 Philadelphia Eagles @ Chicago Bears — 7:15 PM CT
| Matchup | Line (approx.) | Pick | Predicted Score | Comment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eagles @ Bears | PHI –3.5 | Eagles | 27–17 | Philadelphia is 2–0, while Chicago’s QB situation is suddenly a major question. |
🎯 Pick: Eagles
This one changed dramatically after Sunday.
Caleb Williams is week-to-week with a hamstring injury, and Tyson Bagent is also dealing with a concussion. As of Wednesday, Chicago wasn’t certain who would start, with Case Keenum taking the QB1 reps.
That’s simply too much uncertainty for me to pick Chicago against the defending conference champions.
🏈 FINAL WEEK 3 PICKS
| Game | Pick |
|---|---|
| Falcons @ Packers | Packers |
| Bengals @ Steelers | Bengals |
| Chargers @ Bills | Bills |
| Patriots @ Jaguars | Jaguars |
| Jets @ Lions | Lions |
| Panthers @ Browns | Panthers |
| Texans @ Colts | Texans |
| Titans @ Giants | Titans |
| Seahawks @ Commanders | Seahawks |
| Chiefs @ Dolphins | Chiefs |
| Cardinals @ 49ers | 49ers |
| Vikings @ Buccaneers | Vikings |
| Ravens vs. Cowboys | Ravens |
| Raiders @ Saints | Raiders |
| Rams @ Broncos | Rams |
| Eagles @ Bears | Eagles |
📊 Week 3 Prediction
16 games. 16 picks.
🎯 Monday Night Tiebreaker
Eagles 27, Bears 17 — 44 total points
🔥 Five Picks I’m Most Confident In
1. Chiefs over Dolphins
Kansas City is 2–0; Miami is 0–2.
2. Bills over Chargers
Buffalo has scored 77 points through two games.
3. Eagles over Bears
Too much uncertainty at Chicago’s QB position.
4. 49ers over Cardinals
Even with the Purdy question, San Francisco’s defense has been outstanding.
5. Seahawks over Commanders
Seattle is 2–0, and Washington is replacing Jayden Daniels.
👀 Five Games I’m Most Nervous About
1. Cardinals @ 49ers — Brock Purdy’s status.
2. Seahawks @ Commanders — Does Sam Darnold return?
3. Texans @ Colts — Two 0–2 teams desperate for a win.
4. Panthers @ Browns — Carolina’s defensive injuries vs. Cleveland’s home field.
5. Ravens vs. Cowboys — International game + Baltimore’s offensive-line concerns + Zay Flowers’ hamstring.
🏈 Two Weeks Down, Fourteen To Go
After two weeks, we’ve already had:
- A 59-point Bears explosion
- A 34–3 Panthers demolition
- A 9–3 Vikings defensive masterpiece
- The Raiders starting 2–0
- The Rams going from 27–7 losers to 28–6 winners
- Three major young QB injuries
- Kyler Murray becoming a Viking
- And now Jameis Winston taking over the Giants
And somehow we’re still sitting at 22–10 for the young season.
📊 Our Running Record
